Construction of the first rescue centre in Sumatra specializing in pangolins

In the village of Bandar Baru in the province of North Sumatra, we are building the first specialized rescue and rehabilitation centre for confiscated illegally sold or kept pangolins in Sumatra. It will focus mainly on the species that occurs naturally here, i.e. the Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica). The centre is less than a 2-hour drive from the provincial capital of Medan, an important hub for the illegal wildlife trade in Indonesia. The seizure and reception of the pangolins will be carried out in cooperation with the Indonesian law enforcement authorities. Pangolins who successfully undergo the rehabilitation process at the centre will be able to be released back into the wild, based on a systematic methodology. The rescue and rehabilitation centre will meet all the necessary standards for quarantine and rehabilitation of animals and their welfare.
